We made it! Grand-dogs picked up last evening. Phew -- it was stressful!
I joined a local hiking club (on list for 23 for 2023). I can't believe I hadn't thought to look for this before. I have very few friends who like to hike, who hike on my level (some are way out of my league and many don't like anything at all strenuous) or who are available with any bit of regularity.
I'm not a fan of solo hiking. I worry about being isolated, possibly twisting an ankle, etc. And, I find we hike the same hikes over and over -- gets a little tired.
This group is organized, detailed descriptions with difficulty ratings. They also have a bunch of rules -- basic courtesy since groups are small and if you don't show up, you've taken a spot from someone else. It's free, but you must be a member to come on the hikes. All are guide lead with vetted, experienced hikers. Some are dog friendly.
When a hike is added, they give an open registration time. One was added yesterday for a hike today. I set an alarm for registration. Opened at 10 o'clock. I finished registering a MINUTE later and 6 of 8 spots were filled. Spots go quickly. The guide emailed last night to ask about my experience because I'm new -- which made me feel safe. Hike is at 2 o'clock today.
Another hike opens tonight for Saturday morning. I'll see how today goes and decide when I get home. My back is a bit off and hubby is only home Saturday this weekend. I wanted to get a hike under my belt and that's today, so I might decide not to push things for Saturday.
I'm excited because I'll be able to hike with people on my level AND learn about hikes in the area.
Today's hike is a place I've been many times, but a different trail head on the other side of the mountain. I'm curious what this'll be -- 6 miles.
I've been frustrated about lack of hiking partners for a couple of years. One went back to work, one moved, 2 have knee problems and one travels constantly and isn't available often. Hubby will go, but he's not as interested as I am and only has weekend availability.
And it NEVER occurred to me to join a hiking group in GA. I looked at ones in Asheville and they're way over my skill level.
Brainstorming, thought downloads -- whatever you call it, has benefits. It pays to ask questions, be curious, look for solutions. When you ask your brain, it often has an answer. I asked, how can I hike more. Bam. Idea. Google. Hike club. Crazy.
What other areas can I find easy solutions if I ask the right question? Hmmmm.
Have a good Tuesday. Later gators.
P.S. I don't have a cavity. What?!?! Nothing wrong with my teeth. Got a new gel for sensitivity and seeing what happens. Possibly small internal fracture, but nothing on x-ray or exam. What a relief!!
