I'm in a funk. I've tried to fake my way out of it, pretend it's not there, smile through it -- but it's hanging on. Time to face the music. I've arrived in Funky Town (not the good one either).
Gluten - maybe a contributing factor, but not the full reason. I think the diet back to less-than-healthy too much is a result of the funk - which makes the funk worse.
I've become a slug in many ways. Time to get busy and get PRODUCTIVE and get HAPPY again. This is a good time to work on it as I'm back to empty nest as of Friday (although still in contractor hell).
I need to figure out WORK. Go back to work or get off the pot. Go back wins. Time to update the resume, review some notes (get my mind back into "nurse" mode) and start the hunt.
I need to expand my social network. I don't need lots of great friends, but I like lots of good friends. I've been acting reclusive lately - the opposite of My Happiness Project. (P.S. I'm pulling that out today again.) I'm saying NO, not initiating things, hibernating, not cultivating those peripheral friendships ... not ME. Funky Town does that to me.
My usual close social group is hitting a busy couple of months - busy that doesn't include me. A bunch of tentative plans went out the window because of their "busy" -- traveling, kid stuff, surgeries, etc. - nothing personal to me, but it feels personal (hello funk). Dramatic conclusion - yes. But I feel dramatic - that's part of the problem. The "stuff" I was looking forward to is gone. I LOVE alone time. I don't like being lonely. It feels lonely right now.
Not to get all granola-crunchie and woo-woo, but I think the old Universe is telling me to get off my butt and make some changes. My life hiatus was great, but now I need to take what I learned and incorporate it back into productive living. Time to make the donuts.
Saying this "out loud" (i.e. in writing) feels good, stops the pretending, gets me taking steps to end this funk. As I said earlier, the timing is good. Empty nest is back starting Friday. Hubby is out of town for the weekend and most of next week. Lots of ME time to get working on ME. I have a number of podcast I want to check out - some good motivational stuff. AND ... a foster is probably coming my way this week (LOVE).
I thought this post might be a Debbie-Downer, but it actually feels good when I read it back (looking for those elusive typos that don't show up until I publish). Acknowledging is empowering. Thanks for listening to my CRAZY.

Life Updates
Hello and good morning!
Here's some life updates from the weekend.
Saturday was a bust. I had a stomachache and bloat the entire day. Lunch on Friday ended up being pizza - ugh. Has gluten suddenly become an issue for me? Maybe my system is just ramped up and needs some time to settle down. I hope so. AND I was super sad all day. For. No. Reason. Gluten, is that you too??
I have this weird twitching tremor in my left hand since earlier in the week. I credited lifting and holding a really heavy bar in lift class as the cause. Could be. I expected it to stop by now. Of course my mind is going to bad places. At first it was cute, funny ... ha ha. Now I'm approaching worried. You hear too many stories as a nurse. Crazy me is back!
My blue nail polish is holding up well. But I'm already sick of it - knew I would be! First chip and it's gone!! I used another brand the salon has because the color selection is better. I'm curious how well it lasts compared with the Essie.
My new concealer came (after it was lost - reshipment needed). I'll try it today.
I LOVE my blonde hair. Not crazy blonde, but when I look in the mirror I feel BLONDE.
The mystery book I'm reading is interesting (All is Not Forgotten). Written in the perspective of the therapist helping the family deal with the assault. I'm expecting a big twist or shock -- hope it comes -- or the book might be a dud. My sister loved the book, but we don't always have the same taste in books (or movies) (or Presidents for that matter).
September is a trip to Canada to visit my aunt and uncle at their cottage. Cliffs, lighthouses, whales, lobsters ... quaint and COLD and beautiful. We've been invited for the past 3 years and hubby never wanted to go. This year I told him I was going - and I'd go with someone else - no problem. He wanted to go with me though (reluctantly - not as safe without him) so the date was planned around his schedule (hence September). Now he can't go. I'm annoyed. Of all the trips I didn't want to travel solo - over the boarder with a long drive in a rental car, lots of wilderness, etc. Everyone I'd travel with is unavailable in September. Ugh. But I'm going. It's a trip on My HAPPINESS PROJECT and one I've wanted to go on for years. Big girl panties, GPS, food, water - it's happening - I can do this. I'm booking my flights this week.
(I'm annoyed because I didn't listen to my first instinct - go with someone else. There's a possibility hubby's work schedule will not coordinate, but just a possibility. Since he doesn't really want to go, he's canceling at a whiff of a conflict - thought I'd cancel too. Nope. He's back-pedaling a bit and saying if I can be flexible, MAYBE he can go. Again, nope. I was already too flexible. If I concede to his "more flexible" idea then there is a chance the trip gets canceled outright. Funny how his golf weekend was also in jeopardy but he was able to figure that out.)
Sunday was an interval run on the treadmill - hello cardio. Then a trip to the lake to let pup swim. It's too humid for his old bones to hike. He needed some fun too. And, of course, Game of Thrones, but I petered out and will watch it today. I can't wait!

Not the best pictures. I was too busy swimming and playing
to have my phone handy. He's a wet monster - the only dog I know
who can't shake dry! We had a great time - he's a ham in the water!
Today is contractor call day (again) and grocery store runs. Youngest will be home for dinner so I'm cooking something yummy (I need to figure it out!). My INTENTION today is to do some soul-searching. I think it's time to figure out some stuff. More on that soon. Later gators.

Mantras
I have two mantras or quips or slogans I LOVE, one for diet and one for exercise.
It Starts With Food
That's the title of the first Whole30 book. And lordy is it true. Until I tried a W30, I didn't realize how connected EVERYTHING in my body is to the food I put in my mouth. Mood, joints, energy, skin, brain function, sleep, sinuses, sex, immune system, gut health, weight (of course) and more.
Intellectually (and as a nurse) I know those connections exist (duh), but I didn't "know" it. Sure, I know I gain weight when I eat too much. I know my stomach would protest after a night of junk eating. Etc, etc, etc. But my knee pain?? My sex life?? My mood?? Yes and yes and yes.
This last W30 and subsequent "off" W30 really drove it home again (I take a long time to really, really get a message - ugh). I need to be aware. I have thresholds and certain foods don't agree with ME. Everyone is different. Everyone's best diet is different. But everyone's health STARTS WITH FOOD.
When I'm trolling the pantry, I TRY to remember this mantra. Is the less-healthy (for ME) choice worth it?
Just Do It
Thanks Nike. 3 simple words. When I procrastinate working out - boom - Just Do It. When I get stuck deciding how to work out - often the answer is simple. Just Do It.
I'm lucky exercise is part of my life - no matter my size, my age, my mood, my location, my vacation, etc. It's a part of my routine and I feel confident it always will be. The what and how changes here and there, but the routine of it never leaves me.
Just Do It. Overthinking is the beginning of talking myself out of it. There is plenty of time to figure out the "best" way to exercise or something that feels fun or something that is exciting. None of that REALLY matters. What matters is I DO SOMETHING. The rest can work itself out.
And a little secret - I don't usually like working out. I like the way I feel when I've finished working out. It doesn't HAVE to be fun, exciting, joyful, blah, blah, blah. It can be, but isn't often (for me).
Just Do It.

Happy Friday
Good morning. I started a post on my two "life" mantras, but I ran out of steam writing it this morning (oh, the irony). So stayed tuned future self -- inspiration is coming lol!
So here's a recap of yesterday.
The Universe gave me an opportunity to practice PLAYING NICE. Lift is heavy this month so we are partnering up for most classes (assigned partners). My partner required every ounce of that INTENTION. I'm proud to say, job well done. And I hope that's my last time partnering with her (pretty please Universe)!! But Lift was good. Glutes and hamstrings with isolation lifting.
Today is "other" muscles day. What we didn't do all week. Shoulders, quads, etc. This month is one of my favorites so far.
I finally got a manicure yesterday (I know, the suspense was enormous ... will she, won't she). I went for a regular manicure -- baby blue. Something different, a little VARIETY and it only lasts a short time. But my cuticles and nails are cleaned up for my home painting. I'm still not feeling the gel.
I didn't get a chance to read the new "dark beach read" book yesterday. I was all set to head to bed to read when my eldest and his girlfriend stopped over to borrow some luggage - and stayed to chat. I read a bit from For the Love and called it a night.
Today I have lunch with a friend. Should be fun.
So much to say, so little time. Early lift class and my incomplete post means time to go. I don't even have an INTENTION today. Happy Friday!

Guess What?!?
I'm blonde. *mic drop*
I called my hairdresser yesterday and went back to have an adjustment. It was driving me crazy that it was off AGAIN. In turn, I was driving everyone around me crazy. Got bright highlights added. I can't see it completely yet since I air-dried my hair and it's super curly. But even curly, it's BLONDE. Story over - nothing more to report. Crazy be gone now.
Yesterday I got my period - yea - get that girl done.
This morning I feel like a new person. My bloat is so much better (basically gone - we'll see after I eat). I need to LIMIT that gluten. Big eye opener for me. Cold sore is finally over the tingle-zap and it seems to be healed (just the skin needs to get back to normal). Also a possible gluten issue. Worst of the month friend behind me. Back to heavy lifting and my arms feels good -- you know that I-worked-hard-and-my-muscles-feel-huge feeling. (And you may have heard - I'm blonde!!!!!) Ahhhhh ... I'm back to ME.
My mental status seems to have calmed down as well. Unfortunately, not before I had a fit at a car who ran the gate behind me yesterday (i.e. I beeped my horn super long). This is why the gate is ALWAYS broken and they need to go to the other gate if they can't get in. The car followed me through all my turns home - into my culdesac - so I kept driving. Was it a neighbor? I don't know. It was just gone behind me like that. Now I'm paranoid it was a neighbor. Still - don't run the gates. But I didn't behave well and I'm embarrassed if it was a neighbor (I never recognize cars). Lesson noted.
Today is heavy lifting - glutes and hamstrings. Oh boy. But as I've said before, I like my little bit of a butt bubble - it's worth the torture. I'm flat chested and flat butted - one of those I'm able to change lol - the other will have to suffice.
I don't have anything else "planned" today. I was supposed to have a contractor over for an estimate, but I think he's standing me up.
In other news, in an effort to add some feel-good back into my day, I dumped 2 of the 3 books I'm reading. I'll start over another time if they strike a cord. Sometimes a book doesn't resonate and hanging on is painful. One I barely started (but I plan to still read) ... it was high on the literary scale and needs focused ME to read. I downloaded a recommendation from my sister - thriller, beach read. Perfect. All is Not Forgotten -- Wendy Walker. I need an easy, junk read. In case you are wondering, I often read multiple books at once. All VERY different so it's not confusing (i.e. self-help book, mystery, epic novel). The book I'm sticking with is by Jen Hatmaker (For the Love). She's the blogger I'm smitten with currently. She does Jesus in a way that isn't elitist, loves wine, loves girlfriends, loves life. She's funny and down-to-earth. I read a chapter at a time for some humorous takes on life.
That is all cyber-world. My INTENTION today practically wrote itself - BE NICE, PLAY NICE (i.e. no more fits at possible neighbors). Oh boy - hope that doesn't come back to bite me in the butt.

All About HAIR (again)
I ended up changing my plans yesterday. My arm only hurts with certain motion so I came to regret canceling my lift class. I took a chance to see if I could get a spot - yep. So I did some intervals at home and headed to lift (after a quick shower 😜).
Lift wasn't full because this month we are buddy lifting so we can lift HEAVY. Fun!! And it opens the class to more people. I partnered with a really nice gal and we shared a bar, weights and spotted each other. Turned out to be arm day, but it didn't bother my sore area (only hurts with shoulder work).
My arms are plump today! I'm so glad I changed my mind. Rest day today. And it's one of those rest days that feels really good. My body is sore!
Today my old man pup has his vet physical and shots. Then the cleaning crew is coming this afternoon. I'll make myself scarce and check out the carpet place.
The bloat is starting to resolve - thankfully! I'm continuing to be mindful of what I'm eating. It's also PMS week so who knows what to expect.
I made it through some of my intention yesterday. Worked on the INSIDE, but I obsessed over the OUTSIDE. I'm pissed about my hair. It doesn't look bad, but it doesn't look like what I want (and have been trying to get for over a year). I thought switching hair dressers was the answer but lordy is it a SLOW answer. I'm not as obsessed about my looks as this appears. I'm more obsessed about people not LISTENING, not HEARING me.
I thought about calling my stylist today (she only works M,W,F) to see if we can improve this ... but I'm worried about damaging my hair and stripping the keratin. Hubby likes the look a lot. Even my son said he likes it (i.e. I didn't recognize you at work (he's a boy lol) - it looks nice). I sent a picture to my sister who will give me a brutally honest answer and she said - I like it - looks blonde to me. Dirty blonde. I want blonde blonde. So I need to get over myself and let it be. I'm just frustrated about asking, asking, asking. Being patient, waiting to do it correctly and never getting there. I know this was just a mistake, but a mistake that will cost me months to fix. I see the blonde I'm looking for in so many people - why is this so hard for me? I brought in pictures to show her - no problem she said. Apparently, it is actually a problem.
I've worked my self up this morning writing about it. This could be some PMS talking too. Broken record on this - sorry. Here's the picture - any thoughts?!?! I just came from working out (and I'm PARKED at the grocery store - not driving). Looks light brown with some blonde highlights. Not blonde on blonde -- RIGHT?!?!

Hello August
If you can believe this (I barely can and I was there), there was a mix up in the hair color tubes. Instead of happily going even a bit more blonde, I ended up having my gray covered with dark brown. And my gray LOVES color so it soaked it up in just a few minutes. I got shampooed immediately, some special treatment on my hair and still had darker hair.
Back to the hair color lesson that only so many shades can be reversed, etc, etc. Can't correct it all because it would be too damaging to my hair. Free color, half the day later and darker hair -- I was done. I might actually give up. What do I need to do to GO BLONDE?!?!?
Keratin gets washed off today. I'm not expecting a miracle.
Then my phone was acting up. No outbound calls. I had contractors to call back - can't be done from the road. Had to come home to the old land line.
And my stomach is so bloated. Like 6 months pregnant bloated. It's driving me nuts. Gluten is on a hiatus this week. Serves me right for all the bread I ate (I'm talking to you PITA)!
Ugly day.
Some HAPPY girly news though: my Stitch Fix came in the mail and it was a keeper. All things country for a Garth Brooks concert this fall. Style was fun and different. Colors were unusual for me. Jeans were trendy and so comfortable (even with my bloat). Lots of stuff to choose from and styled in a way I would never have figured for myself. I'll be all set for the October concert. I got the Stitch Fix in the summer since they have trouble understanding I live in a warm climate. I can't do chunky sweaters and heavy shirts in the fall. BTW, all the shirts are long sleeved -- perfect for fall, not perfect for now (I told them the concert was NOW). See?!?! They must live in the north lol.
New month, new workout focus at my Lift Studio. Muscle building month. I'm happy for the change, but I have a muscle "pull" in my arm. It's been bugging me and now actually hurts. I need to rest it before it becomes a real problem. Class canceled for today. I hope all will be well by Thursday. And this stomach bloats should have some relief by then too.
The rest of the day is the usual grocery store loop. I'm fresh out of fresh things and my coffee! Today needs to be spot on with eating. 3 meals + no snacks + healthy foods = goodbye bloat?!?! It's uncomfortable STILL!!
I've been doing a lot of thinking about back-to-work and have made some progress. More on that this week. The time is coming and I'm finally "feeling" it. I've been in and out of this funk for the last month and that's prompting me to get my sh*t together.
My INTENTION today is to focus on the INSIDE (i.e. healthy habits) and get over the OUTSIDE (dark hair, bloat, etc). INSIDES matter more -- always. Later gators.
